This group will be the swimming club’s ‘top squad’ with swimmers of 14 and over who want to compete at a county/regional or national standard. The group will consist predominantly of sprint type training to keep the swimmers and will also offer a competitive training group for those swimmers who come back from squad for various reasons. Land training will also become available at this level with swimmers over 16 starting a weights program. Swimmers will still be encouraged to compete at local, regional and national competitions at this level.
Expectations of Competitive A1 Group
- To complete a sprint program to improve 50m and 100m events
- Training will consist of high intensity quality work including speed development to increase the base speed as well as swimming fast under a state of fatigue. Training will also consist of lactate producing, tolerating and removing (not too much) sets so swimmers can swim fast for sustained periods.
- This type of training will be coupled with skill and technique work at low intensity to develop the efficiency of the swimmer.
- Swimmers can also take part in a land based training program to provide extra strength and power and complement the pool program training. This type of training program will take place before training sessions
- Training will be kept interesting, competitive and ‘out of the box’ to retain swimmers interest in the sport.
- Swimmers should attempt to make 2 of the four sessions to see benefit from the training.
- Swimmers will be asked to attend the club gala and other competitions chosen by the group coach. The swimmers may also be asked compete in the National League team when selected
- The program will be aimed at developing a training environment for swimmers coming up from the A2 group or back from Gallica which will be challenging and competitive
- Swimmers will be given the option to take part in a coaching program in which they can gain qualifications and also have the opportunity to volunteer at the club.
