At this stage it is the majority of the training will be skill based with some speed and endurance.  This way we can ensure highly technical and efficient swimmers progressing through our squads.  Although slightly more intense in the requirements that competitive D group, much of the training will be similar.  It is important to point out that this is the first squad in the competitive pathway and that attendance at the club gala, micro league galas (if selected) and level 3 competitions are compulsory once of the correct age.  In this level the swimmers will complete the following type of training.

  1. Development and improvement of technique on all four strokes.
  2. Learn basic stroke drill progression on all four strokes
  3. Practice IM swimming sets of 100 and 200m
  4. Learn and perfect turns and finishes on all four strokes and IM turns
  5. Learn and perfect relay takeovers
  6. Independently monitor training using the pace clock
  7. Complete a well balanced training program that includes varied pace swims (eg building swims, negative split swims, descending sets etc), basic swimming speed, pacing and over distance swims
  8. Learn the rules of the sport
  9. Increase distance to improve endurance
  10. Participate in club galas as well as low level meets
  11. Learn about goal setting and working towards objectives
  12. Learn practices of basic stretching, body weight exercise and core strength work
  13. Take responsibility for own training equipment at each session (pull bouy, kick board, drinks bottle and fins (short blade))
  14. Swimmers should participate in test sets
  15. Should be able to cover around 1500-2500m in a 1 hour session

Squad criteria for moving up into Competitive B group will consist of the following outcomes:

1. Complete a set lasting 800m (E.g. Either 16 x 50m; 8 x 100m; 4 x 200m) on a
specific turn around time set by the coach (E.g. 1.30min for 50m’s, 2.45min for 100m’s;
6.00min for 200m’s)
2. Swim 800m continuously using one stroke
3. Swim a continuous 100m IM using legal turns
4. Perform a 15m underwater kick on front in a streamlined position
5. Perform a Backstroke start then Butterfly kick in a streamlined position underwater
until 10m from the start point (wall), transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of
the 25m
6. Perform a Front Crawl start, underwater kick in a streamlined position until a
minimum of 10m from the start point (wall) is completed, transfer into stroke and
complete the remainder of the 25m
7. Perform a Butterfly start, kick in a streamlined position until a minimum of 10m from
the start point (wall) is completed, transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of
the 25m
8. Perform a Breaststroke start, perform a 1½ pull under water, transfer into stroke and
complete the remainder of the 25m.

It is important to remember however that completing these outcomes alone is not enough to allow a swimmer to move up.  The swimmer must attend regular sessions along with being punctual and having a positive work ethic and ability.  The swimmer must also be competing in the club gala and/or at selected micro league teams as well as level 3 meets.  Failure to meet these requirements will mean the swimmer will be given the opportunity to swim in our Junior Squad.
